Dyslexia Treatment

The variety of options available for dyslexia treatment can be confusing for parents.  There are many different dyslexia treatment and dyslexia tutoring programs available, and discerning which dyslexia program is best for your child can be difficult. In our experience, a dyslexia tutoring program with a proven method and approach is the best way to help a dyslexic child progress.

A well trained dyslexia tutor is able to recognize a child’s dyslexia symptoms, as well as their educational strengths and weaknesses. The dyslexia tutor is then able to address the student’s needs in the most efficient way possible.

Our online dyslexia tutoring program at Dyslexia Connect is proven and effective. Our dyslexia tutors are fully trained and knowledgeable about dyslexia education. In addition, they have a passion for teaching!  Our dyslexia tutors are in this line of work because they love it, and love helping their dyslexic students make progress. When you sign your child up for Dyslexia Connect Online Tutoring, you can be confident that they are getting what they need to succeed.

Dyslexia Tutoring and Punctuation

One element of reading that dyslexia tutors spend a lot of time on is punctuation. Punctuation can be very difficult for students with dyslexia. In my work as a dyslexia tutor, I have seen a lot of dyslexic students who disregard punctuation entirely, making any material that they read out loud sound jumbled. Furthermore, a dyslexic student may disregard most punctuation, but then insert punctuation where it does not belong (putting in random pauses, for example). This difficulty with punctuation can make it hard for the dyslexia tutor or anyone else who is listening to understand what the student is reading. In addition, it makes it difficult for the dyslexic student to understand what they are reading as well. This can be a major problem, and it is related to the difficulties that many dyslexic students have with comprehension.

During dyslexia tutoring, I work on punctuation with my students using several different methods, and you can use these at home as well. One good method is to have the student write sentences using proper punctuation; this repetition will give the a better feel for how punctuation works, and also encourage them to pay more attention to it. Dyslexia tutors also emphasize punctuation while reading with the student. If a student reads a sentence and forgets to pause at a comma, or stop at a period, a dyslexia tutor will often have them return and read it again, emphasizing the punctuation. You can help your student progress by doing the same thing at home.

Rules of English

Since dyslexia tutors work continually with the English language, they are often involved in discussions about the language itself. English is known as a rather difficult language to learn for those who are not native speakers of it. Part of this is due to the many irregularities of the language. A dyslexia tutor is usually very familiar with these, because their work in dyslexia tutoring has made them very familiar with the intricacies of the language. Often, I hear people remark that English by nature is just an irregular language. However, this is not entirely true; while there are a fair number of irregularities, there are also many rules that can be learned and applied to the entire language. In dyslexia tutoring, we train our students in these rules, because they are so important to understanding the language.

The rules in English do have certain exceptions, certainly, but quite often, even these exceptions have rules that govern them and make them similar to each other. Therefore, learning exceptions and the rules that govern them can be a very beneficial exercise.

For dyslexia tutors, it is important to instill confidence in our dyslexic students and convince them that it is possible to understand the English language and improve in it. By introducing them to the structures that govern the language, a dyslexia tutor can help a student to gain this confidence.

Dyslexia Tutoring and Phonics

Some dyslexia tutoring programs incorporate phonics and some do not. In our opinion, phonics are an integral part of a dyslexia tutoring program. When a proven, phonetic method is used by a talented dyslexia tutor, the results can be remarkable.

Phonics are a necessary part of dyslexia tutoring because dyslexics do not acquire language the same way that other students do. Some students pick up on phonetic sounds simply as they learn to read and grow older, but dyslexic students are unable to do this.  A dyslexic student needs a solid, phonics based appraoch to learn these sounds. Without these sounds, a student with dyslexia may have a difficult time sounding out words; even very basic ones.  For example, imagine trying to read the word “pin” if you do not know what these letters say individually.

Here at Dyslexia Connect Online Tutoring, we use a phonics based method that is proven and effective. If you are looking for a dyslexia tutor, check out our online dyslexia tutoring. We are confident that we can help your student improve their reading, spelling and comprehension.

Dyslexia and Reward Systems

A dyslexia tutor is sometimes asked by parents if a reward system can help motivate their dyslexic child. Since reading and spelling can be very difficult for dyslexics, rewarding them for working hard at dyslexia tutoring can sometimes give them an extra boost. A reward system for dyslexia tutoring can be set up in many different ways, and the important thing is finding one that works well for the child.

If you are able to make the reward something constructive for the child, that is all the better. For example, if the child has a certain amount of good dyslexia tutoring sessions, you can bring them to a bookstore and let them choose a book. In this way, you are rewarding them, and helping their reading by encouraging their interest in books. Another great reward can be going out to eat, or going out for ice cream. Does your dyslexic child have a favorite restaurant or ice cream shop? You can let them know that you will take them there after a certain amount good tutoring sessions.

When using a reward system for dyslexia tutoring, another issue arises, and that is how to judge the child’s efforts. For dyslexia tutors, this is usually fairly easy to judge; however, it needs to be reported in a way that is positive and affirming. In my career as a dyslexia tutor, I have found it easiest to simply tell the parents every week, or at the end of every month, how many really good sessions we had. In this way, if a child has a day with a bad attitude, I am not reinforcing it by telling them that they did not make a good effort that day. Certainly, a dyslexia tutor will be able to determine how to best use a reward system with a child.

Dyslexia Tutoring and Patience

For parents with their children in dyslexia tutoring, patience is very important. Dyslexia tutors know that it is difficult for parents to see their dyslexic children struggle academically. Often, the parents have already reached the point of frustration in thier efforts to help their child make progress. When a dyslexia tutor starts with a new student, they may be the last resort in a long ling of attempts to address the challenge of dyslexia.  For this reason, it is particularly important to be patient when a child has just entered dyslexia tutoring. The rate of progress varies dramatically from child to child, especially when they first begin their dyslexia tutoring.

Dyslexia tutors often tell parents that it will take a least a month of dyslexia tutoring before they begin to see progress. Sometimes, it may take even a bit longer than that, depending on the child. However, when you have enrolled your child in a quality dyslexia tutoring program, you can be assured that they are getting the instruction that they need, and that the progress will come, even if it takes some time.
